WM5G Green Innovation Challenge
West Midlands 5G (WM5G) is the organisation established to drive the roll-out and adoption of 5G networks and technology across the West Midland and to test, prove and scale up new 5G products and services.
Developing, proving, and scaling major new green innovations utilising 5G technology could prove crucial in helping the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) on its plans for reaching net-zero carbon by 2041.
To help pioneer new green technologies, WM5G partnered with 5PRING and Suez, a large utility company and the WMCA to launch the Green Innovation Challenge programme. 5PRING’s cohort of successful applicants now has access to cutting edge technology and a private 5G network.
One project example includes KC Technology, which is a smart traffic control system that includes smart radar-based traffic detection to monitor vehicle and pedestrian flow. 5G’s ability to transfer data in real-time enables big data traffic control modelling, allowing traffic lights to change on demand, meaning congestion can be resolved more efficiently, reducing pollution levels.
Liquid helped support the launch of the challenge. Ahead of the challenge, awareness driving content through PR releases, website content and social posts helped to drive applications to the challenge.
With the projects ongoing, Liquid continues to raise the profile of the work being done to provide solutions to environmental challenges through 5G technology. This has included building a case study for each of the projects on the WM5G website, ongoing press coverage and learnings from the projects regularly updated through social content.
