It might have been a political earthquake, but David Cameron’s response to the EU referendum result in favour of the UK leaving the EU was incredible – whatever side you were on in the debate. Having met the prime minister and heard him speak on multiple occasions, I was always struck by his calmness even in the face of very difficult problems and issues. It’s something that other people have also noticed.
His valedictory speech was a masterclass in how to admit defeat with magnanimity, a difficult thing to pull off even in the best of situations. Not many of us would be able to stand in front of the world and hold it together. Mr Cameron’s calmness, measured response and inclusive approach to his opponents was genuine and important to steady the ship over the next few months.
And it’s something that others might do to take on board when it comes to tone, communication and dealing with people in the right way.
